THE DEVIL!!!! in music....

(NB: a few days ago i went on an enormous ramble about the tritone in a music theory server, so i am making the info clearer to read.)

the DEVIL in music!!! if you have been online a lot, you have heard this phrase, and went "cool phrase". usually you think, the only thing that is in music is notes, but this phrase says there are MORE things in music. it has the word "devil" in it. what on earth could this mean... to answer this question...

0. SOME THEORIES ON WHAT THE DEVIL IS, AND HOW IT GOT INTO MUSIC

so. FIRST PRINCIPLES are important in music theory, so in order to figure out how the devil got into music, it is important to learn what the devil is. and in order to know what the devil is... (did you know, there are experts on knowing what the devil is), i must consult... [technoblade voice] THE CLASSICS...!!!

(i don't know what the classics are, so i asked my friend peter, and he says this guy knows who the devil is.)

(from Saint Thomas Aquinas "Summa Theologiae, First Part (Question 63)" (as paraphrased in Paul J. Glenn "A Tour of the Summa"))

so, what he is saying here (you can read, i believe in you!!!), is that the devil wishes to be like God, BUT he doesn't want to follow his laws. so he would make laws kind of like God's, but they'd be his instead.

i don't know who "God" is, so i asked my friend peter and he gave me ANOTHER giant book to read that is all about that.

0.1. what???

ok, LIST OF THINGS THIS COULD MEAN

0.1.1 LITERALLY THE FIRST THING GOD DID

the first thing god LITERALLY did, was... hold on...

(from "biblehub.com", Douay-Rheims Translation (Genesis 1:1-8)

(while i don't know anything about what else this guy has done, "splitting light and darkness from the void" seems HUGE. there is EVEN more things, apparently)

incredible, INCREDIBLE. i am learning so much. alright, to recap.

0.1.2 WHAT ARE GOD'S RULES?

to tell you the truth, there is a LOT of things in here, and i have no idea what a lot of it means. BUT according to the books i was reading, there are THREE PERSONS of God, but also ONE God. now i have no idea what that means either, BUT as a musician what i CAN tell you is that it reminds me of one of my all-time favourite hobbies, "typing in numbers into a calculator that can tell me what prime numbers are in the number".

0.2 FROM THIS MOMENT ON, I AM ASSUMING A THEOLOGICAL DOCTRINE BASED ON TYPING NUMBERS INTO A CALCULATOR THAT CAN TELL ME WHAT PRIME NUMBERS ARE IN THE NUMBER

now, a common sense adult will tell you that no number can be any other number but itself, this is why they tell you to count numbers in school. they are all like, one tooo three four five six. and then they have these ridiculously high numbers like "97" on those thin plastic film strips that rectumnavigates all along the walls of the classroom. BUT, as any kid obviously knows, all numbers connect through an even COOLER framework, that of "the aesthetic qualities"...

0.2.1 keffie, i have grown up and i do not know how the numbers connect through the aesthetic qualities.

yes... now, this is bound to happen. everyone says it is because of the government chemicals, but i have a more succinct explanation, you see, when you are a little child, your age is a very round and comfortable number that does not have any complex factorisations. "4" year olds, "5" year olds and so on are ALWAYS enjoying the sensuous pleasure of simple numbers due to everyone associating them with their low age, and if you are reading my page you are probably some bogus number like "31" or "13" years old. so to recap, here is how the numbers work:

0.2.1 HOW THE NUMBERS WORK

(something like this, do not scrutinise the order, i just made it up,

so, now, when you are slightly older, like... "6" or "8" year olds, they will tell you how to MULTIPLY the numbers, and this part is really cool, but they don't actually tell you why its so cool. so for example, one multiplied by a number is itself... two multiplied by a number is double itself, and so you can get numbers like "12" which contain six AND two, or they contain four AND three. and they also contain "one". what this means is that EVERY NUMBER can, in a sense, contain numbers inside itself. so, for the number "three", its "factors" are "three", and "one". so that is how something can actually be THREE AND ALSO ONE at the same time.

interestingly, another word for multiplying numbers is "timesing" them, such as in "the times tables". could this have anything to do with the flow of time???

0.2.1.1 how does??? this

i'll TELL you how this fits into the rant... slowly, and over time. so, you have "1", which is in every single number. a number "times" one is always itself, and one times itself is one, eternally. (quite literally unchanging due to "times"...) then you also have... wait, do you know what the "harmonic series" is.

0.2.1.1.1 no

ok well i'll explain that first.

0.2.2 THE HARMONIC SERIES!!!!!

the harmonic series is basically numbers but applied to notes. as a note cannot be anything but itself (the number "1"), a "note" is just "God" expressed through time (by timesing it). since "God" is represented by the number 3 (and also 1), we can consider all the numbers between this to be the "formless waters". as it turns out, when you multiply a note by 1, you get the same note, and when you multiply a note by 2, you get an octave.

here is what music would sound like if it was JUST these two numbers...

in the first case, the note is just playing itself, doing nothing else. in the second case, the note is able to play in different registers, but it is caught in a tape loop. "that's great!! end the rant there", you say. ok, probably not. there's no devil here!!! so, let's introduce him...

光よあれ。

so, for the first time ever, the number THREE was introduced to the world of numbers. as all timesing is about time, each time must have a length... in earth terms, every octave is exactly "1200 cents" in length, and the note you get when you multiply a note's frequency by three is about "1902 cents" in length, or "702 cents" inside each octave. how does this "split the world into light and darkness", you ask? well, you can also divide the note's frequency by three, and get a note that is about "-1902 cents" in length, or "498 cents" inside each octave. with these two operations, we now have TWO distinct, morally unambiguous areas of notes, the day between 0 and 702 cents, and the night between 498 and 1200 cents. wait, that doesn't seem perfectly split. NOoOOOOOOO

(well, shucks... all light comes packaged with a Light Bringer after all...)

they certainly did not promise creation to be boring. we'll see how THIS sucker gets his teeth into music in the next installment...

<-- back to how much i dont rule..........
